The older I get and the longer that I have been out of school, the less I find myself reading. I think that most people fall into this category. For me, this change has been stark. During my college years, I worked at a library and would often plow through 1-3 books a week on top of my course load.
When I noticed my change in reading habits, I decided to do something about it- enter in 30 books in 30 days, September. Every September since 2016, I have challenged myself to read 30 books during that month. I include audiobooks, graphic novels, plays, and books of poetry in addition to traditional books.
At left is my stack of physically read books from 2017. Right now, I am not feeling very confident in my abilities to make it to September 30th with even ten books read. A Little Life has been sitting on my nightstand for seven months. That's the exact point of this challenge- to get me reading like a kid again. I devoured books as a child. I would go to the library and return with stacks of giant books. This challenge pushes me. It also forces me to make some sacrifices. Instead of watching Netflix, I'm reading. Or instead of listening to the radio, I'm listening to an audiobook. I just have to chose to succeed.
I plan to start this year by reading through all the unread books on my shelves. I will hopefully be blogging this year's challenge and posting daily updates on my instagram and Goodreads. My ultimate reading goal for 2018 is 100 books, but right now, I have it set at 80. I am 18 books behind. I can catch up though, I always do.
I would love it if you joined me in this year's challenge. What are you most looking forward to reading? One of my favorite booktubers, Books with Emily Fox, always gets in the mood for thrillers and spooky reads starting in autumn. I love her recommendations and much of my TBR has been influenced by Emily. And girl reads fast. Speed reading would be my choice superpower after healing powers.
Do you have any book recommendations for me? Feel free to comment your down below and let me know if you're joining in on the fun.
Happy Reading!
